Rural Safe Space – FLINTA Community Hub

Blackwater Training is delighted to launch Rural Safe Space, a new FLINTA Community Hub for County Cavan. The programme will provide opportunities for women, lesbians, intersex, non-binary, trans and agender people to meet, take part in activities and develop new social connections within their local community.

Living in a rural area can make it more difficult to access inclusive social spaces and activities, particularly where services and LGBTQ+ organisations are concentrated in larger towns and cities. Through Rural Safe Space, we want to develop a local programme which responds to this gap and provides regular opportunities for people to come together in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

The programme will include a range of social, recreational and community activities, with the programme itself being shaped by the people who register. This may include coffee mornings and social meet-ups, creative activities, workshops, day trips, wellbeing activities, community events and other opportunities identified by participants.

We are currently inviting people to register their interest in joining the Rural Safe Space community. As part of registration, participants will have an opportunity to tell us what types of activities they would be interested in and what they would like to see developed locally.

There is no requirement to have previously participated in an LGBTQ+ or FLINTA group, and registering does not commit you to attending a set number of activities. People can become involved in a way that works for them.

Participation in Rural Safe Space activities will be free of charge, although registration may be required for individual activities where places are limited.

Funding

Rural Safe Space is funded through the 2026 LGBTIQ+ Community Services Funding Call – Scheme B: Supporting Community Services for LGBTIQ+ Persons, administered by the Department of Children, Disability and Equality.

This funding is supporting Blackwater Training to develop the Rural Safe Space FLINTA Community Hub and provide inclusive social, recreational and community activities for people living in rural communities.
