Language Learning and Intercultural Communication


Overview

In multilingual and multicultural classrooms, teachers are often challenged to support learners with different language levels and cultural backgrounds. Effective strategies for language learning and intercultural communication are essential to create classrooms where every student can thrive.

At Blackwater Training, we have created this Erasmus+ Teacher Training course to provide educators with practical approaches to teaching language, supporting second-language learners, and fostering intercultural understanding. The course combines language-supportive pedagogy with non-formal methods, reflection, and Irish cultural experiences.

Who is it for?

Course Aim

By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:

  • Understand key principles of second-language acquisition.

  • Apply practical strategies for language-supportive teaching across subjects.

  • Use intercultural communication techniques to build empathy and inclusion.

  • Develop lesson plans and classroom activities for multilingual groups.

  • Build confidence in teaching and supporting migrant and refugee learners.


Methodology

The course is interactive and participatory, using:

  • Workshops on language acquisition and intercultural communication

  • Practical classroom activities for supporting language learners

  • Non-formal education methods such as roleplay, storytelling, and peer learning

  • Cultural immersion to strengthen intercultural awareness

Sample Programme (6 Days)

  • Day 1 – Understanding Language Learning in Education

  • Day 2 – Language-Supportive Teaching Strategies

  • Day 3 –  Intercultural Communication in Practice

  • Day 4 – Teaching Multilingual Groups

  • Day 5 – Project and Lesson Design

  • Day 6 – Cultural Day: Irish Language & Heritage Experience

Outcomes

Participants will leave with:

  • A deeper understanding of second-language learning and intercultural communication

  • Ready-to-use lesson plans and classroom activities

  • Greater confidence in teaching multilingual and multicultural groups

  • Practical tools for inclusion and empathy-building

  • Certificate of attendance (Europass documentation available)

Practical Information

  • Duration: 6 days (5 training + 1 cultural visit)

  • Location: Baileborough, Co. Cavan (1 hour from Dublin)

  • Group size: 10–20 participants

  • Language: English

Fees

€400 per person – Training Only

  • 5 full training days (30 hours)

  • Training materials and resources

  • Tea/coffee breaks

  • Certificate of attendance (Europass documentation available)

€550 per person – Training + Cultural Package

  • Everything in the Training Only package, plus:

  • 1 full-day cultural excursion (e.g. Trim Castle, Boyne Valley, Dublin City)

  • Guided cultural activities (music, heritage, storytelling, etc.)

  • Organised group reflection and networking during the cultural visit

Accommodation and airport transfers can be arranged upon request.
